Course Criteria

 

 

Learn to Swim Level 1

These are the competencies that your child will gain confidence in on our Level 1 Course.

Starfish

S1-1 Enter the water safely
S1-2 Move forwards for a distance of 5 metres S1-3 Move backwards for a distance of 5 metres
S1-4 Scoop the water and wash face
S1-5 Be at ease with water showered from overhead
S1-6 Move into a stretched floating position using aids,equipment or support
S1-7 Regain an upright position from on the back, with support
S1-8 Regain an upright position from on the front with support
S1-9 Push and glide in a horizontal position to or from a wall
S1-10 Take part in a teacher-led partner orientated game
S1-11 Demonstrate an understanding of pool rules S1-12 Exit the water safely
S1-13 Be at ease to fully submerge

Jellyfish

S2-1 Jump in from poolside safely
S2-2 Blow bubbles a minimum of three times rhythmically with nose and mouth submerged
S2-3 Regain upright position from the back without support
S2-4 Regain an upright position from the front without support
S2-5 Push from wall and glide on the back
S2-6 Push from wall and glide on the front
S2-7 Travel on the back for 5 metres, aids or equipment may be used
S2-8 Travel on the front for 5 metres, aids or equipment may be used
S2-9 Perform a rotation from the front to the back to gain an upright position
S2-10 Perform a rotation from the back to the front to gain an upright position
S2-11 Jump in from poolside safely
S2-12 Pick up object from platform floor


 

 

Learn to Swim Level 3

S3-1 Jump in from poolside and submerge (min depth 0.9m)
S3-2 Sink, push away from wall on side and maintain a streamlined position
S3-3 Push and glide on the front with arms extended and log roll onto the back
S3-4 Push and glide on the back with arms extended and log roll onto the front
S3-5 Travel on the front, tuck to rotate around the horizontal axis to return on the back.
S3-6 Fully submerge to pick up an object from pool floor
S3-7 Answer correctly three questions on the Water Safety Code
S3-8 Travel 10 metres basic backstroke
S3-9 Travel 10 metres basic front crawl


 

 

Learn to Swim Level 4

S4-1 Demonstrate an understanding of buoyancy
S4-2 Perform a tuck float for 5 seconds
S4-4 Push and glide from the wall to the pool floor
S4-5 Kick 25 metres backstroke (one item of equipment optional)
S4-6 Kick 25 metres front crawl (one item of equipment optional)
S4-7 Kick 10 metres butterfly on the front or on the back
S4-8 Kick 10 metres breaststroke on the back (equipment optional)
S4-9 Kick 10 metres breaststroke on the front (equipment optional)
S4-10 Perform on the back a head first sculling action for 5 metres in a horizontal position
S4-11 Travel on back and roll in one continuous movement onto front
S4-12 Travel on front and roll in one continuous movement onto back
S4-13 Swim 25 metres backstroke
S4-14 Swim 12.5m frontcrawl


 

 

Learn to Swim Level 5

S5-1 Perform feet first scull on the back for 15m
S5-2 Perform a feet first sculling action for 25 metres whilst horizontal on the back
S5-3 Tread water for 30 seconds
S5-4 Swim 50 metres backstroke (refer to the ASA expected stroke standards sheet)
S5-5 Swim 25 metres front crawl face in the water (refer to the ASA expected stroke standards sheet)
S5-6 Swim 15 metres breaststroke (refer to the ASA expected stroke standards sheet)
S5-7 Swim 15 metres butterfly (refer to the ASA expected stroke standards sheet)
S5-8 Perform a forward somersault, tucked, in the water
S5-9 Demonstrate an action for getting help
S5-10 Sink, push off on side from the wall, glide, kick and rotate into backstroke
S5-11 Sink, push off on side from the wall, glide, kick and rotate into front crawl
S5-12 Glide/kick frnt crwl Sink, push off on side from the wall, glide, kick and rotate into front crawl


 

 

Learn to Swim Level 6

S6-1 Demonstrate an understanding of preparation for exercise
S6-2 Swim 10 metres wearing clothes
S6-3 Swim 50m front crawl to include at least six rhythmical breaths
S6-4 Swim 10 metres wearing clothes
S6-5 Swim 50m front crawl to include at least six rhythmical breaths
S6-6 Swim 25m breaststroke to include at least six rhythmical breaths
S6-7 Swim 25m butterfly to include at least three rhythmical breaths
S6-8 Swim 100 metres backstroke
S6-9 Perform a "shout and signal" rescue
S6-10 Perform a surface dive
S6-11 Exit the water without using steps


 

 

Learn to Swim Level 7

S7-1 Swim 200 metres backstroke
S7-2 Swim 200 metres front crawl
S7-3 Swim 200 metres breaststroke
S7-4 Swim 50 metres butterfly
S7-5 Perform a sitting dive
S7-6 Swim 100 metres IM
S7-7 Swim 400 metres, using a minimum of three different strokes
S7-8 Tread water using eggbeater action for 30 seconds
S7-9 Complete an obstacle course (using minimum of four objects) with feet off the pool floor throughout
